Important: How to Properly Check for Head Lice
Due to the ongoing lice issue, please check your child’s hair using a lice comb, not just visual inspection. Lice and especially eggs (nits) are often missed by the naked eye.
What you need
-
A metal lice comb (plastic combs are often ineffective)
-
Bright light (natural light or a lamp)
-
Conditioner or damp hair (lice are easier to find in wet, slick hair)
-
Paper towel or tissue to wipe the comb
How to check
-
Start with clean, damp hair and apply conditioner generously.
-
Section the hair into small parts.
-
Place the lice comb flat against the scalp and comb from scalp to ends.
-
After each pass, wipe the comb on a paper towel and check for:
-
Live lice (small, fast-moving insects)
-
Nits (tiny yellow/white eggs firmly attached to the hair shaft, usually within ¼ inch of the scalp)
-
Pay special attention to:
-
Behind the ears
-
The nape of the neck
-
Continue until the entire scalp and all hair have been combed.
This process should take 10–20 minutes per child.
Important treatment note
Most over-the-counter lice shampoos:
-
Do NOT reliably kill eggs (nits)
-
Are increasingly ineffective due to resistance
-
Should never be relied on alone
If lice or nits are found:
-
Manual nit removal with a comb is essential
-
Repeat combing every 2–3 days for 2 weeks
-
If using any treatment product, a repeat treatment at 7–9 days is critical to kill newly hatched lice
Children can return to school once live lice are eliminated, but continued combing is necessary to prevent reinfestation.
Consistent, thorough combing by all families is the only way to stop an ongoing outbreak.
PLEASE CHECK THE LOST AND FOUND IN THE CAFETERIA FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S ITEMS. ANY ITEMS NOT PICKED UP BY 12/19/25 WILL BE DONATED.

Parking Decals for the 2025-2026 School Year
We recognize parking can oftentimes be a challenge when visiting campus. This year, to better manage our parking lots and limit use by individuals not affiliated with Vanderlyn, we’ll be distributing parking decals like the one shown above.
These decals should be placed in the bottom corner of the driver’s side windshield and will help us ensure that parking remains available for teachers, staff, and parents throughout the year. You can pick up your decal in the front office with Ms. Gillett. Please limit to 2 per family. All other visitors can pick up a temporary tag from the front office when visiting campus.

In October 2024 Dekalb County Schools announced a process, the Student Assignment Project, to comprehensively evaluate its approach to assigning students to schools, including school boundaries, use of existing buildings, and the process for assigning students to specialty schools (i.e. magnet, IB, language). In addition to a thorough review of available data including current and projected attendance levels, the District has hosted a series of meetings to share what they are doing and solicit input from the community. All meeting recordings and notes are available at this link. The Student Assignment Project will culminate in Winter or Spring of 2026 with a report of recommendations that will be presented to the Board of Education for consideration. The district is asking parents to review notes and be proactive with any feedback and comments before formal recommendations are formed. You can reach the SAP committee to give feedback via the website at: https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/sap/contact/.
Your help is needed! Please consider volunteering your time and joining one of our PTO Committees (click here for descriptions of each!). To learn more about how you can get involved or for information about chairing a committee, please reach out to vanderlynelempto@gmail.com.
